MING DESIGN STUDIO was founded in Amsterdam in 2019 by industrial designers Zhiya (Yona) Huang and Mingshuo Zhang, both graduates of the Design Academy Eindhoven. Before founding the studio, Yona worked at Philips Design in Eindhoven, while Mingshuo worked at Philips Design in Amsterdam, where they gained extensive experience in international product development and human-centered innovation. Inspired by the cultural narratives of Eastern and Western craftsmanship and the relationship between industry and everyday life, the studio combines innovation with a human touch through hands-on experimentation, creating objects and experiences that foster meaning and emotional connection.
With years of experience across diverse industries, MING DESIGN STUDIO works across multiple disciplines, ranging from furniture and object design to installations and technology-driven product innovation. As a small and closely collaborative studio of five to six people, the team works much like a band — with each member bringing their own expertise, perspective, and creative voice into the process. Through this multidisciplinary and hands-on approach, the studio explores the intersection of functionality, culture, and storytelling, creating works that balance innovation with emotional connection.
The studio has collaborated with international brands worldwide, and its works have received numerous international design awards, including Red Dot, iF, G-Mark, and IDEA. In 2020, its project Bold Stool was highly commended in the “Seating Design of the Year” category at the Dezeen Awards.
