Collaborate with Philips Design

From June 2017 to October 2020, Mingshuo Zhang worked as Industrial Design Lead at Philips Design’s Male Grooming department in Amsterdam. During this period, he led and collaborated on a wide range of grooming and personal care projects, including shavers, beard trimmers, OneBlade and IPL devices.

Working closely with multidisciplinary internal teams as well as external freelance designers, he was involved throughout the entire product development journey — from early-stage consumer insights and innovation strategy together with marketing teams, to concept creation, product design development, engineering collaboration and final product launch. Several of these projects successfully entered the global market and contributed to Philips’ innovation portfolio in personal care.

After leaving Philips, Mingshuo co-founded Ming Design Studio together with Yona Huang. Since 2021, the studio has continued collaborating closely with Philips Design on various projects, covering both front-end innovation and integrated product design across categories including Mother & Child Care, Shaving, Beauty and Oral Healthcare.

With a strong balance between strategic thinking, hands-on product development and refined design execution, the studio brings extensive experience in creating meaningful consumer experiences for global markets.

Goal:

• Rather than simply embedding functions into the product, we aim to integrate form language and functionality in a more refined and fashion-forward way

• Through a rich and bold use of contrasting color combinations, we enhance usability while strengthening users’ personal expression

• To evolve functional elements—such as air-cushion structures—into a design language with strong brand recognition, forming a distinctive visual and structural identity for TORRAS

Process:

begins with in-depth research into target users, analyzing needs across protection, personal expression, and specific usage scenarios to define clear design directions. We then develop innovation concepts that challenge engineering boundaries, integrating form development with technical solutions. Supported by extensive CMF and color studies, we create designs with greater expressiveness and a contemporary aesthetic. This is followed by integrated product design to realize diverse concepts, combined with Design for Manufacturing to ensure all final solutions are feasible, high-quality, and ready for production.
